ZANON PROJECT

Patagonia Argentina | 2009

The next images where taken at the Zanon ceramics factory in Patagonia (Argentina). The factory was taken over by the workers in 2001 after an unexpected closure that left 380 men and women unemployed. Several years from then, after many struggles with the Argentinean government, law, and police, the factory is still working and considered as a new revolutionary social phenomenon inside of Argentina and abroad. The Zanon workers are totally self-organized, and have a very specific method of work, in which every function is rotary. There are no hierarchies; there is no boss, only workers.

The following images are a four minutes compilation from one hour RAW material.

NOSTALGIA AND CHAOS PROJECT

Mediamatic, Amsterdam | 2008.

"Nostalgia and Chaos" was an interactive project on Argentinean culture. Within the frame of the exhibition ‘Gastarbeiders Dating’ at Mediamatic Amsterdam.

In this installation, I developed different activities. I took the role of the artist as well as curator using my own work but also inviting Argentinean artists to show their work. The ongoing activities varied: a workshop on Argentinean food, a debate on cultural identity with guest artists: Tiong Ang, Rini Hurkmans, and Mayura Subhedar. There was a library with Argentinean literature, projections and a performance: “Vaarwel Amsterdam” (based on a poem by Vicente Zito Lema; a farewell ‘song’ to the city of Amsterdam when he goes back to Argentina after seven years of exile).

After each activity, that what had happened, was represented written on the floor and the walls, and so covering all the space with texts by the end of the week.

POPULAR ALTARS

Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam | 2007.

This installation work was based on a research done in 2006/2007 in Patagonia, on ‘Popular Altars’. With all the information/material/impressions gathered, I started a parallel process of writing and working on an installation in which the viewer could see the process.

Different layers of handmade paint on the wall were visible under big (A0) photocopies of the altar pictures taken in Patagonia and drawings referring to the different myths and saints these altars were dedicated to.

Several texts whit stories and information about the altars where spread around in the installation, and could be taken away by the visitors.

About the work

My interest as a visual artist lies at the intersection of art and social reality, using this as a basis for my artistic practice, focusing on issues such as ethics, collaboration, marginal groups or political conflicts.

A family story between dictatorship and democracy, life between two countries, (Argentina and The Netherlands) cultures of wealth and poverty, are all elements I use as an archive, both personal and social. I do not always work through a static ordering of this archive, but more often through constant reassessment and rearrangement of the elements.

I take an active role in the investigation/research, by traveling or getting involved in a certain situation I’m interested in.

I’m not bound to any specific medium and deploy those methods and strategies that are most adequate to an individual issue I seek to address.
